Library Observances : National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th - October 15th.

National Hispanic Heritage Month was started in 1968. The month recognizes and celebrates how Hispanic people have shaped the history and culture of the United States.

History: The choosing of the month is significant due to the number of independence days celebrated by Latin American countries that fall within the time frame. "It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Johnson and was expanded to a month by President Reagan 20 years later in 1988."
